Le Miel et la lune

In recent times, I have tended to dine out within my own little geographical  bubble. Boring! Luckily I now have a partner in crime, my sister Victoria, living North of the city and she guided me to a favourite cafe of hers.

Le Miel et la lune has popped up on Cardigan St Carlton in recent years - well it certainly wasn't there when I was at uni - and seems to be a popular spot with the locals.

Surrounded by fresh faces, the three of us squeezed onto a table that seemed more appropriate for two. And between catching up and taking goofy photos, we managed to order our meals and a couple of drinks.

Michelle complained that the baristas in Melbourne ruin soy milk or use dodgy soy milk, something like that. But this seemed to occur everywhere, not just at Le Miel.

There was nothing dodgy about my apple, carrot, celery and ginger juice though - it is one of my favourite concoctions.

When my Vegetarian Breakfast with a side of Smoked salmon arrived, I found the presentation a little surprising. Firstly, the avocado wasn't crushed very well, which is not a big deal, it just seemed a bit odd. I had also expected the Meredith feta to be mixed into the baked beans or the avocado, which makes no sense as the menu does not indicate this, I guess my expectations were set by previous experiences.

Maybe they should call it the Deconstructed Vegetarian Breakfast... maybe I just need to try new places without expectations. Regardless, at $21 and $7, for my breakky and juice respectively, it seemed a bit of a stretch for the uni crowd. (Do students save for brunch instead of booze these days?)

Now don't get me wrong, it was a delicious meal and was clearly made with fresh ingredients, but it didn't impress me.

Something that did impress, however, were the tiny treats Michelle and Victoria decided to grab for later. While these looked gorgeous (and apparently tasted pretty good too), I decided to give these a miss.

Personally I couldn't understand why there were so many uni students there, as it definitely isn't cheap, but with bright spaces, fresh food and a location just one minute from Melbourne Uni and Lygon St, there is an understandable appeal. I'm not convinced that I would recommend it to others just yet, but having heard good things about the lunch menu, you can look forward to a 'Part 2' post sometime in the future.

  1. Yes - I really wanted to like this place too! It's nice enough but the food and prices don't quite compete with my favourite cafes.

    1. I couldn't agree with you more. 'Nice' just doesn't seem to be enough when there are so many alternatives.
